Viburnum × bodnantense 'Dawn'—commonly known as the Bodnant Viburnum—is a deciduous shrub celebrated for its fragrant, winter-blooming flowers and vibrant foliage. Ideal for adding early-season colour and scent to gardens, this cultivar offers both ornamental and ecological benefits.

Botanical Name: Viburnum × bodnantense 'Dawn'
Common Name: Bodnant Viburnum
Family: Adoxaceae
Origin: Hybrid cross between Viburnum farreri and Viburnum grandiflorum, developed at Bodnant Gardens, North Wales, in 1935 .

Size: Grows to approximately 2.5–3 meters (8–10 feet) in height and 1.5–2 meters (5–6.5 feet) in spread .
Foliage: Deciduous with dark green, toothed, ovate leaves that emerge with a bronze tint, turning green as they mature.
Flowers: Clusters of richly fragrant, dark pink flowers that age to white, blooming on bare stems from late autumn through early spring (November to March) .
Fragrance: Strongly scented, making it ideal for planting near entrances or paths to enjoy the aroma during winter months.
Hardiness: Fully hardy in the UK H5, (USDA Zone 4), suitable for a variety of climates .
Growing Conditions
Soil: Prefers moderately fertile, moist, well-drained soil; adaptable to a range of soil types including chalk, clay, loam, and sand .
Sun Exposure: Thrives in full sun to partial shade; best flowering occurs in full sun.
Position: Suitable for planting in borders, hedges, or as a specimen plant in gardens.
Moisture: Requires moist but well-drained soil; avoid waterlogged conditions.
