Peppermint (Mentha piperita)is a perennial herb thathas very fragrant, dark green serrated leaves and produces tinymauve flowers that beneficial insects love.
It has a strong mint flavour that makes a wonderful tea that is said to help with nausea and indigestion.
It has a very refreshing taste and is often used as a seasoning for beans, peas and potatoes in the summer. Mint also has a place in indian and mediterranean cuisines.
Sowthe peppermint seeds from March onwardsin a propagator or somewhere warm.
Theseeds should be sprinkledover a tray of dampcompost and placed in a polythene bag to keep the humidity up.
Germination can take up to 20 days.
When seedlings are large enough to handle, pot on to small pots, a few seedlings in each pot.
Harden off and plant out from May, after all risk of frost has passed.
