Acknowledged as one of the greatest landscape artists of all time, J. M. W. Turner (1775–1851) knew Oxford extremely well. From childhood, he made numerous drawings of the streets and colleges, and of the picturesque views surrounding the city.
Originally commissioned by a local printseller and Framemaker James Wyatt, this painting is one of the most fully documented of all the artist’s works and it is in this painting that Turner felt he had achieved an unparalleled view of technical mastery which he could not repeat.
