This solid dark opal cabochon from Lightning Ridge showcases rich green fire with golden undertones and flickers of cobalt blue, all set against a deep N5 body tone. Cut as a symmetrical 9.5 x 7 mm oval, it offers a generous face-up for its weight, making it a versatile option for either collectors or jewellers.
The play-of-colour is vivid and dynamic, shifting with movement in strong flashes that remain clearly visible even in moderate light; this is a bright opal, sitting comfortably in the B3 to B4 range on the brightness scale. The fire pattern has a sweeping, painterly quality with directional flow, giving it a distinct and characterful face.
While technically a dark opal rather than black (N5 rather than N1–N4), it offers a similarly bold visual impression with slightly softer contrast. The polish is smooth and glassy, with a clean surface and no visible flaws.
