Seed Germination
Sacred Lotus seeds are large and have hard coat - but are actually straightforward to germinate and can remain viable for hundreds of years!
Using a metal nail file, hacksaw blade etc scrape away at the side of the seed until a tiny amount of the white seed kernel is visible
Be careful not to dame the seed kernel
Soak in room temperature water for 3 days, changing water daily
Seeds should swell to almost double their original size.
For any seeds not swollen, file the seed a bit more and repeat soaking process
Plant seeds 2cm deep in a pot of damp compost that is standing in a plant saucer of about 1cm water
Ideally use rain water of distilled water
Keep at 20-30c in a bright spot - if night time temperatures drop below this, use a heat mat
Pot on as required, keeping the pots in saucers of water
Plant out as you with any other water lily in late spring
