How to Grow
Planting: Plant the Asiatic Lily bulbs in autumn or early spring in a sunny to partially shaded location with well-drained soil. For best results, plant bulbs 10-15cm deep and space them 15-20cm apart. These lilies do well in both borders and large containers.
Watering: Water the bulbs thoroughly after planting to help them settle, and keep the soil consistently moist during the growing season. Avoid waterlogging, as lilies prefer well-drained soil to prevent bulb rot.
Feeding: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring as new growth begins to support strong stems and abundant blooms. You can feed again lightly just before the flowers start to open to encourage larger, more vibrant blooms.
Staking: If grown in windy or exposed areas, these tall lilies may benefit from staking to keep the stems upright, especially once they start blooming. Use slender stakes or plant supports to avoid detracting from the flowers.
Deadheading and Maintenance: Remove spent blooms to keep the plant looking tidy and encourage energy to return to the bulb. Once flowering has finished, allow the foliage to die back naturally, as this helps the bulb store energy for next year.
Overwintering: Lily Asiatic Red is hardy in the UK and generally doesn’t require lifting for winter. However, adding a layer of mulch in late autumn will provide extra insulation for the bulbs, particularly in colder regions.
With its intense red blooms and low-maintenance nature, Lily Asiatic Red brings a burst of colour and sophistication to gardens, creating a striking summer display that returns year after year with minimal effort. Perfect for borders and as cut flowers, this lily variety is a true garden classic.
