Product description
Calathea lancifolia, commonly known as the Rattlesnake Plant, is a striking member of the Marantaceae family, prized for its long, lance-shaped leaves with deep green patterns resembling reptile markings. The purple-toned undersides add a vibrant contrast, and like other Calatheas, its leaves move in response to light, folding up at night and unfurling in the morning. This tropical beauty thrives in warm, humid conditions, making it a fantastic statement houseplant.
Scientific Name
Calathea lancifolia (lance-shaped Calathea, referring to its elongated foliage)
Synonyms
Goeppertia lancifolia (current classification)
Common Name
Rattlesnake Plant
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light. Can tolerate lower light levels but may lose some vibrancy in dim conditions. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate foliage.
Water
Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Allow the top 2–3 cm of soil to dry out between waterings. Use filtered, distilled, or rainwater where possible, as tap water can cause leaf browning due to its sensitivity to fluoride and chlorine.
Humidity
Thrives in high humidity (60–80%). Mist regularly, use a pebble tray, or place near a humidifier to maintain moisture. Dry air can cause crisping on leaf edges.
Soil
Requires a well-draining but moisture-retentive potting mix. A blend of peat or coco coir, perlite, and pine bark works well. Repot every 2–3 years to refresh the soil.
Food
Feed every 4 weeks during spring and summer with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser. Reduce feeding in autumn and winter to every 6–8 weeks.
Temperature
Prefers temperatures between 18–26°C. Keep away from cold drafts and avoid temperatures below 15°C.
Pet-safe
Non-toxic to pets and humans.
Sprouts Top Tips
To keep leaves looking their best, wipe them gently with a damp cloth to remove dust and improve photosynthesis. Avoid placing near heating vents or air conditioners, as fluctuating temperatures can stress the plant.
Extras
As a member of the prayer plant family, Calathea lancifolia exhibits nyctinasty – the ability to move its leaves in response to light changes, folding up at night and opening during the day.
