Another vigorous climber is Clematis 'Madame Julia Correvon', which bursts to life with blooms from the middle of summer until the end. Dark red star-shaped flowers emerge across the plant for a dramatic look.

Despite being the 'late' bloomer of the lot, you'll only be waiting until June to see the mid-to-large flowers of Clematis 'Comtesse De Bouchard', with mauve-pink petals surrounding creamy yellow stamens.
