What is N-Acetyl L-Cysteine (NAC) Powder?
N-Acetyl L-Cysteine (NAC) is a pre-cursor to the powerful antioxidant Glutathione. Antioxidants help fight free radicals and play a role in protecting DNA, proteins and lipids from oxidative stress. NAC together with amino acids Glycine and Glutamine replenish Glutathione. NAC also helps regulate levels of the neurotransmitter glutamate.
NAC is the supplement version of the naturally occurring amino acid L-Cysteine. Amino acids are used for several bodily functions including creating proteins and enzymes. Amino acids are broken down into three different groups: essential, non-essential and conditional amino acids.
L-Cysteine is a non-essential amino acid, meaning it can be found naturally in the body as well as in foods such as chicken, pork, garlic and eggs. Supplementing with L-Cysteine is extremely unstable, whereas N-Acetyl L-Cysteine is a more stable form. The specific form NAC can’t be obtained via the diet.
