Lysine is an essential amino acid found in protein which isn’t produced in your body. Lysine may help to slow down or prevent the growth of the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), which is responsible for cold sores. Lysine is not a cure for cold sores, but it may help prevent and shorten the duration of an outbreak.
High-strength Manuka honey – made by bees collecting nectar from New Zealand Manuka bushes – contains the active ingredient methylglyoxal (MGO), which has an antimicrobial and also anti-bacterial effect on the body, according to a 2018 study by Ulster University.
In a 2009 German and New Zealand study, researchers suggested honey could speed up the healing process in skin because:
•honey stimulates the inflammatory response in the body, leading to the regeneration of skin cells and connective tissues
•the pH level of honey is very low, which reduces infection
Avena sativa (Oat) kernel oil is a golden lipid extracted from oats with amazing moisturising and healing properties and a non-greasy finish. It has shown effectiveness in treating a variety of skin conditions, including skin rashes, erythema, burns, itch, and eczema thanks to its anti-inflammatory abilities.
Aloe vera gel has showed in one particular study that its anti-inflammatory and antiviral effects could have inhibitory effects on cold sores.
Witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) is a shrub that’s indigenous to the United States and has been used for centuries by Native Americans as a remedy for a variety of skin ailments related to irritation and inflammation.
Apply to the affected area as and when needed. For best results, apply every two hours. Wash hands before and after applying.
