Golden variety of topaz was coloured using the glow which emanated from the god Raa (an anthropomorphism of the sun). The Roman's took a similar stance, associating it with Jupiter (another sun god). The ancient Greeks went a step further down the rabbit-hole believing that Topaz would legitimately render the wearer invisible, should an emergency arise that required such a David Copperfield-like disappearance. In Hindu mythology, Topaz (meaning heat) was believed to extend life, or sharpen the wearers intellect. On the African continent it was been used widely for healing rituals stretching back to the height of the empire of Mali. In fact there is evidence for similar ritualistic or stylized practises stretching multiple continents; all emanating from the value so many civilisations placed on beautiful Topaz. Perhaps most famously amongst the Tsars of Imperial Russia, who kept the stone exclusively for the royal family - which is where the epithet "Imperial topaz" finds it's origin.
Topaz comes in a variety of colours, ranging from a clear translucent, to blues, through a host of yellows and browns, and even a series of pinks and reds (rarer). It should be taken on board however that various pinks (which are considered more valuable) are most often nothing more than heat treated brown Topaz that has been irradiated to make it appear more valuable than nature prescribed. Sadly there is no valid scientific method available for distinguishing whether or not topaz has undergone this kind of procedure or not; inevitably blurring the lines between how valuable particular pieces are. Thankfully though, topaz is not only valued by colour, but weight and clarity. Much in the same way as most other gems.
